Professional Digital Photography - First introduced last summer, Camp Katy added a Professional Photography course with its addition of industry expert and student favorite Miguel Varela. With over twenty years of experience to pull from, our curriculum is designed to not only inspire beginning photographers but to challenge aspiring professional photography students.

  • Understand industry terminology
  • Features of advanced digital cameras
  • Setting and utilization of manual camera settings (no auto)
  • Manipulation of light, filters, framing composition, exposure times, aperture and  shutter speed to achieve the “perfect” picture - rule of thirds
  • Introduction to photography techniques such as panning, panoramic, high speed, infrared, black and white, pinhole and much more!
  • Adjustments needed for subjects – action, still, nature, portrait, etc.
  • Different file formats and their limitations
  • How to share your pictures on the web and print
  • Camera and tripod setup and essential maintenance
  • 1 – 3 Photography Field Trips – locations will be determined the first day of camp

Ages: 8-17
Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced
Photography Trips: Photography techniques must be practiced in the field, not just taught in a class room. After students have the basics, they will visit local venues to perfect their new skills. Locations and schedule will be given to the parents at the end of the first day of camp.
Past Trips: One of the benefits of having a professional freelance photographer and photo journalist as your instructor, is cool trips. Last summer our students took pictures in downtown Houston, The Children's Museum, Galveston Strand & Beach, Moody Garden's Rain Forest, bird sanctuary and attended a Houston Dynamo practice and the Houston Texan's press day.
Take Multiple Times: Many of our students have taken this course several times and are looking forward to attending this summer again. Our instructor, Miguel, is one of the student favorites with his light-hearted personality and ability to teach complex techniques in ways they understand.
Portfolios: A digital portfolio is included in the course tuition and sent home on the final day of class.
Options: Photo coffee table books of your child's portfolio are available for an extra charge and can be ordered during registration. Additional, digital portfolio CDs can also be purchased at that time.

Sessions are Monday - Friday, from 9am to 4pm. Early drop-off as early as 7am and
late pick-up until 6pm is available at NO additional charge. Kids bring their lunch daily and a Camp Store account can be setup at registration or up until the session start
date to purchase items at the snack bar or camp store.
