A Letter From Our Camp Director

Camp Katy started 6 years ago with a clear goal, to bridge the gap between what our kids are learning in school and what they will need to be successful in the real world. With 3 kids of my own, I witnessed first hand the lack of computer skills they were being taught in school in one of the "best" school districts.

My husband and I scoured through the local and national computer camps looking for a good solution for our two oldest children. What did we find? Overpriced programs whose idea of teaching were fancy online tutorials and instructors whose first look at the curriculum was shortly before they were assigned the class. Don't be fooled by pretty websites and big university names, we weren't.

We have been working in the computer industry for over 15 years and have successfully started and run 3 reputable computer repair stores. We knew we had more to offer our kids than the programs we found. Camp Katy was born!

All of our courses are taught by an instructor with industry experience or a college student who is both studying for and inspired by the industry. The curriculum is designed with 5 principles in mind:

1) Customizable - Our curriculum is adjustable to suit multiple skill levels and learning styles. The same course can be taken multiple times and your child will learn something new every time.

2) Instructor led start to finish with a 8:1 student to instructor ratio. However, every class has at least 1 assistant or intern assisting in all aspects of the class bringing the actual student to staff ratio to 4:1 or better.

3) Student independence - we don't just want them to learn the content but know how to find answers on their own. Where do professionals go to find the answers they need? We give them the inside scoop!

4) Real world knowledge - each course includes instruction in how it fits into the real world. How does the industry operate? How can I get a job in this industry?

5) FUN! We design the courses with the idea that we want the kids to have so much fun they will forget they are learning.

Our campers leave with confidence in their new skills, the tools to continue building on what they have learned at Camp Katy, and many new friendships.

This local Katy business was created by Katy resident & Class of '92 Katy High School graduate, Amber Foxhoven Strickland. A mother of three, she like other Katy moms struggled to find fun and engaging activities for her children during the summer. Frustrated by the level of technology being taught at school, the idea for Camp Katy was born. Beginning with just a couple of half day classes seven years ago, Amber has grown her camp to teach over 350 kids at the summer 2010 day camp session.
